Welcome to the Contact Response Unit!

In 2387 the Hobus star went supernova and sent the Beta quadrant into a state of disarray that it had not seen in decades. While the Federation tried to provide relief to the Romulans, the Klingons set aside their allegiance with the Federation and attacked the remnants of the Empire, never having forgotten the massacre at Khitomer. The neutral zone became virtually non-existent and those who lived within the boundaries separating the great forces now found themselves left on their own to fend for their survival.

By early 2388, numerous away teams with high ranking officers had found themselves either captured or killed during the chaos on various worlds. Some saw the arrival of a Federation away team as a chance to settle old scores. Others saw opportunities to profit, kidnapping officers in the hopes of hefty ransom. After the fifth such incident Starfleet had had enough.

The heads of Federation Security, Starfleet Intelligence, and the Diplomatic corps came forth with a solution. Small, hand picked and well trained units, led by officers with ranks no higher than Lieutenant, would be created. They would be the first to assess whether or not senior officers should proceed. In addition they would conduct diplomatic and social recon, provide embassy security at time, be bodyguards of captains, flagstaff, and some diplomats, and should the need arise, rescue the aforementioned individuals.

The concept did not go over well with command level staff. There were many memos, meetings, and all out shouting matches about the subject. In the end, regardless of the protest, the CnC of Starfleet and the President of the Federation agreed to a trial of the project. So, in April of 2388 the Contact Response Unit came online.

Only the best were chosen for the unit. No blemishes on one’s record. No checkered pasts. No scandals. Only the best and brightest. After six months of intense training, on Oct 1, 2388, Stardate 47634.44, led by Lieutenant Alex Haines, Contact Response Unit Alpha was deployed to the field.

Torval was in her room, going over her notes from a recent archaeological symposium. She could have attended remotely, but it was always better to be there in person when she could. Her suitcase sat by her bed. There would be time to unpack after she reviewed her notes. She…
